MERIDIAN – Coach Novak has a very, very young team this year – but that doesn’t mean they are inexperienced. The Petre boys, Christian and Monte have been absolute studs this year. Spencer Yahrmarkt has been a buzz-saw. Ben Blake has been moving up and down and showing poise. And even though the team has faced injuries, with the league’s best pitcher – Jonah Weisenberger – banged up a bit, and last year’s player of the year, Damon Walter, essentially playing with one leg, the Mustangs have been rocking everybody. They just finished off the Hornets 15-0 and 14-0 in shortened innings.

Yahrmarkt took the win in opener, tossing 5 K’s, surrendering one hit in three innings of work. Christian Petre rocked a pair of hits and added an RBI and a pair of runs. Zack Arthur had a double, as did Joe Garner. Yahrmarkt aided his own cause by going 3 for 3 with 2 RBI’s.

“We’ve had a lot of guys stepping up this year, particularly the young guys,” said Meridian’s Mark Novak. “The Petre boys have been rock solid this year, particularly as freshman. Then Damon Walter has been tough even though he’s been banged up. In the first game, we were able to put the bat on the ball, run the bases, and play some good ball.”

In the night cap, it as Dayton Schultz who made light duty of the Hornets, surrendering only 4 hits while striking out 6.

“Schultz was out last year, but he’s came right in and has been doing a great job for us. He’s really been impressive, including tonight,” said Novak. “This Harrison team has guys that can hit the ball and they’re improved over last year. Coach Whitfield is going to have this team heading in the right direction.”

Christian Petre was 3 for 4 in the night cap, while scoring a run. Arthur had a in the park grand-slam, to add to his 2 hit, 2 run performance.

“I was very impressed with Sanford both defensively and offensively,” said Harrison’s Tom Whitfield “Matt Haskell in the infield, Logan Tenwalde at 1st, and Justin Yager at CF, have been outstanding on defense.  The rest of the team continues to work hard on defense and should improve.”

Whitfield is optimistic moving forward despite a few injuries.

“Outfielder Jacob Patterson is out with a pulled groin indefinitely.  He had been helping offensively and defensively prior to his injury…[Thomas] Nunnally, Haskell, Tenwalde, [Dylan] LaPorte and [Zach] Anderson have a combined .304 average in the last 3 double headers against Beaverton, Clare and Sanford, who have outstanding pitching.”
