Pioneers continue to spin up dust on base-paths

Thoman Nunnally has been a spark for the Hornets, ignited the moribound baseball program under Coach Tom Whitefield’s instruction. Nunnally was on of the few Harrison guys to get a hit and on base.

HARRISON – The Clare Pioneers have continued to fill up the scoreboad with crazy numbers. This time, it was their counterparts to the north, the Harrison Hornets that were the benefactors of Clare’s willingness to keep the foot on the gas, stealing bases, dropping bombs, and running for home as they sloshed up the first victory 26-3, then turned around in the night cap and poured out a 10-0 victory.

In the opener, Clare flung up 3 runs in the first inning, with Colton Punches singling to left. Matt Magnus belted a shot, Harrison compiled a few wild throws, and Punches came rumbling in. That turned out to be the theme of the game. Logan Emery continued to flex, driving in Magnus. Then Brock Swan stepped into the box, jumped on Harrison’s Cody Coopers toss down the middle and pinch runner Mitch Greenacre took from 3rd like an  out of control freight-train to turn in the third run of the inning.

Clare would dump on 4 more runs in the second and one more in the third before the Hornets could get the ball popping.

Harrison’s Zach Anderson spanked a hit, then snuck to second. Matt Haskell unloaded to right field to put Anderson on 3rd.

Clare’s defense has be relatively uneasy as compared to years pass, collapsed and allowed three runs to score on poor fielding and throwing.

But with Clare being able to toss up 26 runs, I guess it didn’t matter a whole lot.

Colton Punches was 2 for 3 with 4 RBI’s, Nick Montini was 2 for 2 with 2 RBI’s.

Dylan LaPorte and Zach Anderson both had hits for Harrison.

In the night cap, Charlie Bugbee went 3 for 3 with 2 RBI’s to lead the Pioneers.

Harrison was led by Nunnally and Haskell who both had a hit a piece.

“We are improving. I think we are going to win a few more games this season,” said Tom Whitfield of Harrison.

Despite bulking up to a thick 245, Mitch Greenacre remains nibble on the base-paths.

Clare JVs dump-truck Ogemaw Falcons

CLARE – The Clare Pioneers have continued their dominance at the junior varsity level, this time by toppling the Falcons of Ogemaw to the tune of 12-1 and 7-2.

In the 12-1 lambasting, Camden Dice started off the dance party with a double and sprang home when Sam Adkins ripped a single. The bats stayed hot in the initial inning, with Max Swan connecting and sending Adkins in to put another run up on the board.

The Pioneers broke the game wide open in the 3rd when Swan started off with a double. The Falcon’s pitching went wild, as Ryan Seiter took a steamer to the meat-loins. Ben Bates bit down on a juicy one to get on, and Erik Hasenfratz sank a 2 RBI double. The pitches continued to fly radically, David Lingaur walked, Alex Dysinger got hit by another pitch, and as soon as they managed to put the rock through the strike-zone, Dice ripped a single to send in a pair of runners.

Camden Dice finished the day going 3 for 4 with a double and 2 RBI’s. Hasenfratz had a double and a pair of RBI’s. Dice gave up 5 hits and 1 run in the 12-1 victory.

In the 7-2 victory, Clare flicked a pair of runs up on the board in the first inning. Dice got on with infield shot, then moved around the bases when Adkins sacrificed. Dice sprang home off a Mason Packard blast coupled with Ogemaw throwing errors. With Packard on the route, it was only a matter of time before he was flagged into home plate. Packard boogied home off a Ryan Seiter sacrifice shot into the outfield.

The Pioneers edged out in the 5th, with Adkins leading off with a single, followed by a Packard knife-slice through the Falcons’ defense. With the table set, big bruising Max Swan powered in a 2 RBI double. Clare scored one more time, as David Lingaur sent a shot up the third baseline, giving enough room for Swan to romp home.

Ogemaw scored a pair of runs late in the 7th.

Sam Adkins took the win on the mound, striking out 4.
