SANFORD – With the temperatures entering the triple digits the American Legion summer baseball thrived. Gladwin Post 171 and Sanford Post 443 added another chapter to their rivalry. Baseball was insanely wildly intense between these two mid-Michigan all-star squadrons on July 3rd the eve of America’s birthday. Sanford prevailed making a couple more stellar plays to upend Gladwin, 10-9. “Whoever wants to know the heart and mind of America had better learn baseball.”, exclaimed former Major League Baseball legend, Rogers Hornsby.
“Baseball is the only field of endeavor where a man can succeed three times out of ten and be considered a good performer.,” uttered Ted Williams. The legendary Red Sox hitter reminds us of how challenging hitting a baseball is, most fizzle after 10th grade. Williams was the last MLB player to bat over .400 (.406), Gladwin’s Billy Bittner came into last week batting .493.
